Reading Bill Kauffmann’s always lively prose in praise of secession, I was stirred to return to my George Grant, the Red Tory heir to the legacy of the best anti-secessionists there were, the Loyalists, whose story has been told so well in the classic The Good Americans. Specifically, Mr. Kauffmann wrote a line that gave me pause:
You can’t bloat a modest republic into a crapulent empire without sparking one hell of a centrifugal reaction.
My initial reaction was, “That’s right! Here comes decentralism and the Front Porch Party!” My second thought was, “Wait a minute, you certainly can do that and avoid a centrifugal reaction. Washington has been doing it for decades, if not longer.”
